I am the person that very rarely gets rid of clothes. As a matter of fact, this summer was the first time I’ve parted with pieces I’ve had for years. There are three primary reasons for this. Firstly, I rarely outgrow anything (a gift and a curse we will discuss in a later post). Secondly, I don’t follow trends so most of my closet consists of items I genuinely love and that age well throughout the years. Thirdly, I actually enjoy the challenge of finding new ways to style old pieces—bringing them back to life in a sense.
All that to say, would you believe that I’ve had the houndstooth, Tommy Hilfiger jacket featured in this post since high school?? Freshman year of high school to be exact. Wide-eyed, but still stylish, 14-year-old Myriha was wearing this same jacket down the halls of MPHS 13 years ago. My mom gifted me with this jacket for Christmas that year from Carsons Pirie Scott, which was my favorite store back then (I’ve been old at heart for a longggg time lol). I am now 27 years old and it still fits beautifully and receives tons of compliments everytime I wear it.
It goes to show that you don’t have to consistently shop or spend a ton of money to be stylish.
The basic principle is to work with what you’ve got and make it work exceptionally well for you. And what helps me keep this in mind when I do decide to go shopping/thrifting is to always ask, “what do I already have in my closet that will go with this if I choose to buy it?”
Because when you’re constantly “mentally wardrobing your closet,” as I would like to call it, affordable outfits that maximize pieces you’ve had for many years can come together seamlessly.
Have a great rest of your week ladies. As always, feel free to reach out with any questions on this look.
Love,
MB
